The Invasion Clavate Tortoise Beetle

Okay, so maybe I exaggerated a bit. It was one beetle on one eggplant but that little guy was hungry. And one of the weirdest pests I have ever seen.

It took me a little while to figure out what it was. I had never seen anything like it before. I thought it was some kind of slimy larvae.

It is actually a Clavate Tortoise Beetle. Supposedly a common beetle, it favors snacking on plants from theĀ Solanaceae family, such as tomato and eggplant.
