Making Butter

Tonight I challenged myself with something new and totally fun. I made butter. I grabbed a mason jar, filled it half way up with heavy whipping cream and shook away. It took around twenty minutes total to get the butter and buttermilk to separate. It was super easy to do and a bit of an arm work out. And most importantly, it tasted good – just like butter.

Granted, shaking heavy cream for twenty minutes isn’t practical, especially if you have milk coming from several goats but it was still a fun experiment. I really got to see the stages – heavy cream, whipped, solid, buttermilk and butter. It was an educational experience.

Next time I’ll use the mixer.
